Six other Americans detained in Venezuela in the months after the country’s July presidential election were freed by the government of President Nicolás Maduro after he met Grenell in February.

Caracas wants the U.S. president to allow oil companies to stay in the country. Nine Americans remain detained.

The family of Joseph St. Clair confirmed his release. The move comes as the United States threatens to choke off Venezuela’s critical oil revenue.
